Quincy Delight Jones Jr. or better known as Quincy Jones is a legendary musician with a splendid music career that spans over 70 years. The American record producer, songwriter, arranger, composer. and film and television producer, has a record-breaking 80 Grammy Award nominations, 28 Grammy Awards, and a Grammy Legend Award which he received in 1992. Over the course of his career, he has made numerous contributions to the music industry.
Early Life
Quincy Jones was born in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, on March 14th, 1933. But later on, due to certain problems his family was facing, they moved to Seattle after the war ended. Quincy Jones attended Garfield High School. This is where he started to build his skills as a trumpeter and arranger. Jones and his classmates used to play music together, and at the age of fourteen, they played with a National Reserve band. Growing up in a smaller city gave Jones the chance to gain a lot more experience with music.
Music Career
In the 1950s, Quincy Jones started to gain attention and came to prominence as a jazz arranger and conductor. Prior to this, he was working on pop music and film scores. As time went by, in 1968, Quincy Jones became the first African American to receive a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song was “The Eyes of Love” from the movie “Banning”. During this period, Quincy Jones also produced three of Michael Jackson’s most prominent albums “Off The Wall”. “Thriller” and “Bad”. As time progressed, he became the first African American to be the musical director and conductor of the Academy Awards in 1971.
Quincy Jones also holds the title of the second most Oscar-nominated African American in history. In 2013, he was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as the winner, alongside Lou Adler, of the Ahmet Ertegun Award. Quincy Jones was also named as one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century by Time. Recently, he also made an appearance on popular singer the Weeknd’s album “Dawn FM”.
